Q & A

Aligning Energies

Imagery and Empowerment

One of my earliest and most influential teachers was Robert Gass, a most gifted and amazing person.  His Opening the Heart weekend workshops were powerful experiences in loving community for connecting and transforming emotions, identity and spirituality.  They had a tremendous impact on me as powerful experiences of healing in a group through the use of music, movement, song, ritual, loving attention, and emotional/energetic release within a very safe and caring context.  The basic skills that I still use in my Inner Guidance work came from a single 3-hour workshop experience with Robert some 25 years ago.  I’ve been practicing, developing and teaching Inner Guidance ever since.  To learn more about Robert’s work, visit sacredunion.com.

A very early influence for me in using thought and imagery for empowerment and change is Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. 1978. A great little book.

Empowerment  by David Gershon and Gail Straub, Delta (1989) is a very comprehensive resource on the topic.  I attended their Empowerment for Professionals workshop at Omega Institute many years ago.  Their work has been significant for me and many others.   Last I checked, they were still teaching Empowerment at Omega every summer.  Check out their website at www.empowermenttraining.com.

One of the most distinctive features of Aligning Energies work is its commitment to integrating different modalities for personal growth and transformation.  My own studies with Stephen Gallegos, and the Personal Totem Pole Process were pivotal in my spiritual development and ultimately in the creation of my own unique approach to healing. The book Animals of the Four Windows: Integrating Thinking, Sensing, Feeling, and Imagery by Eligio Stephen Gallegos Ph.D., Moon Bear, 1991 is a great place to start or deepen your journey into your own depths. Neurolinguistic Programming and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy have greatly influenced both the theoretical foundations and specific techniques of Aligning Energies. I completed year-long certification programs in both systems. For general information on Neurolinguistic Programming, check out www.nlpinfo.com. Here is Robert Dilts and Judith DeLozier’s Encyclopedia of NLP. In particular, I would recommend looking up: levels of learning and change, resource, reframing, submodalities and parts model.

Robert Dilts is at the top of my list of authors and teachers in the field of Neurolinguistic Programming and coaching. His recent book, From Coach to Awakener, Meta Publications, 2003 should be a classic in the field of coaching, if it isn’t already. This work speaks clearly and succinctly about such things as coaching new competencies, teaching cognitive capabilities, mentoring empowering beliefs and values, sponsoring growth in identify, and awakening awareness.  Specific tools for intervention are provided at each level.

Dilt’s earlier work, written with Tim Hallbom and Suzi Smith, Beliefs, Pathways to Health & Well-Being, Metamorphous Press, 1990, provides essential information on the use of NLP with health issues. In this book you’ll find valuable information on beliefs, reality strategies and conflicting beliefs which are all important components of Aligning Energies work.

Aligning Energies draws upon a strong foundational understanding of altered states of consciousness.  An early influential work in my studies, was Trance-formation, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis, by John Grinder and Richard Bandler, Real People Press, 1981.

The Answer Within: A Clinical Framework of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy by Stephen R. Lankton and Carol H. Lankton, Brunner/Mazel 1983, provides an advanced text for hypnotherapists.  The “attitudinal framework” described here is strongly embodied in Aligning Energies work.  This includes such things as: respecting all messages, teaching choice, resources lie within, and meeting the client at their model.

An important book in the field of hypnotherapy is Trances People Live, Healing Approaches in Quantum Psychology by Stephen Wolinsky, Ph.D.  the Bramble Company, 1991.  This work, based on advanced Ericksonian hypnotherapy training seminars, offers a profound shift in perspective on trance states. Highly recommended for serious students of hypnotherapy.

Entering Inner Images, A Creative Use of Constellations in Individual Therapy, Counselling, Groups and Self-Help, Eva Madelung, Barbara Innecken, Carl-Auer, 2004.  This work is for readers with a profession interest in integrating NLP and Hellinger Constellation work. It is a clear description of therapeutic interventions that assist clients in perceiving themselves in relationship to their goals, obstacles, resources and significant others in empowering and transforming ways.  A very strong resource.

I recently discovered the Intuition Network website, which has transcripts of interviews with outstanding authorities in the field of intuition and consciousness.  A quick look convinced me that this was a valuable link to pass on to readers of my own website.  Check out their downloadable library.
